making melody

Here’s a good question to ask yourself the next time you’re worried and tied-in-knots about something: is it really that important?

“If the moments of your day-to-day life were recorded as musical notes, what kind of music would they make?” Eugene Peterson

“[M]aking melody with your heart. . . .” Ephesians 5:19

strength of soul

Today could be a good day or a bad day. It’s more a matter of perspective than circumstances.

“Every trouble is an opportunity to win the grace of strength. . . . Fortunately, every day is crowded with care. . . . Every day we are blessed with new opportunities for the development of strength of soul.” George Hodges

“Be strong . . . for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

with seas of life

If the person beside you were teeming with seas of life, it would be a shame to see her as dry and flat and two-dimensional (especially if that is how she sees herself).

“I within did flow/with seas of life, like wine. . . .” Thomas Traherne

“Then God said, ‘Let us make human beings in our image and likeness, reflecting our very nature.’” Genesis 1:26

try trusting

If you try trusting God to give you what you need this morning, it will probably be a little easier to try trusting this afternoon (and tonight).

“The Lord’s Prayer speaks of ‘daily’ bread. . . . It is as if he were to say to us: ‘He who gives you this day will also give you what you need for this day.’” Gregory of Nyssa, 4th century

“Give us this day our daily bread. . . .” Matthew 6:11

something better

When a baby first learns to sit up without toppling over, it makes you wonder who he will be (when he can walk and run and jump and play). It’s fun to wonder that about yourself, too.

“[L]ame men and women will leap like deer. . . .” Isaiah 35:5

“God wants to do something better with people than people think.” George Macdonald

explore and learn and enjoy

Really listening to somebody is like going on vacation. First you cross the bridge from your country into his (leaving what-about-me behind), and then you explore and learn and enjoy.

“Listen, and you will be refreshed and revived.” Isaiah 55:3

Father, I want this to be a listening day.
