permission to pause

In a fast-paced world, you need to give yourself permission to pause. Without it, you might get used to running on and on, breathless and overwhelmed.

“A life without pauses is like a paragraph without punctuation; it runs on and on, leaving us breathless and overwhelmed.” Society of St. John the Evangelist

“Let the weary rest.” Isaiah 28:12

the smallest thank-you

If even the smallest thank-you is a prayer, maybe prayer is a lot simpler and more enjoyable than we think.

“Live your life as a gift, not as a given. This is a way to ‘pray without ceasing.’” Br. Curtis Almquist

“Pray without ceasing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17

down the line

You will get some invitations today to change (the way you think or react or whatever) for the better. If you keep your eyes open for the invitations and risk saying yes (no matter how uncomfortable yes feels), who knows who will benefit down the line.

“The life I touch for good or ill will touch another life, and in turn another, until who knows where the trembling stops or in what far place my touch will be felt.” Frederick Buechner

“He heals all your diseases.” Psalm 103:3

you're in the frame

If you want to see your own life clearly, you have to rely on other people’s eyes. Your own view will always be a little skewed, because you will always be a little too close.

“It is difficult, if not impossible, to see the picture if you’re in the frame.” Unattributed

“[The blind man] said, ‘Lord, I want to see.’” Luke 18:41

harboring resentments

I almost decided to harbor a new resentment yesterday. I was ready to give it a sheltered spot inside me (maybe for years), but I changed my mind. I decided to look for some less toxic things (like wonder and thanksgiving and good humor) to harbor instead.

Harbor: to give something shelter or a home

“[G]iving [me] the desire and the power to do what pleases Him.” Philippians 2:13

whole heart

I wonder how much more enjoyable today would be if I decided to do (even a few) things with my whole heart – fully present, right where my hands and feet are?

“Whatever you do, do it with your whole heart. . . .” Colossians 3:23

“Living mindfully is the art of living awake and ready to embrace the gift of the present moment.” Sr. Macrina Wiederkehr
