do you see?

A few days ago, I went on a family picnic with one of my favorite little people. After lunch, while his dad and his little sister were playing in the open field, he was hunkered down over his sticker book. I saw him, and I was sad because he was choosing an indoor activity when he should have been playing. Later, I asked him if he wanted to take a walk, and he said yes. We strolled through the field, hand in hand. “Do you know what I was doing with my sticker book?” “No. I would like to know.” “A giant was coming, so I moved all the stickers from the front and back covers to the inside pages so they would be safe. Hey, Bets, let’s find a super-high hill and roll down it!” The giant had been foiled, and it was time to play.

Father, thank you for this gentle reminder that, when I think I see someone clearly, I often don’t.
