a sea of need

Once upon a time, there was a little boy who lived in a small town. One morning, his parents told him to get ready for a long walk. They were going into the countryside to see a man who was healing people. Thousands of other families went, too. Somehow, late that day, the little boy’s family managed to get so close to the man that they could hear him talking with his friends. His friends were saying, “It is dinnertime, and everyone is hungry. You should send this crowd away so that they can get something to eat.” But the man said, “How many loaves of bread do you have? Go and look.” When the little boy heard this, his heart started to pound. With all his courage, he said, “Here, sir. I have five small loaves and two fish.” The man took the little boy’s food and looked up into the sky and said thank you. Then he handed out pieces of bread and fish until everyone in that sea of people had eaten as much as they wanted. And the little boy watched, and the little boy never forgot.

“[Jesus] said, ‘How many loaves of bread do you have? Go and look.’ . . . His friend Andrew said, ‘There is a little boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but that’s a drop in the bucket for a crowd like this.’ There were about 5,000 men [probably a total of more than 15,000 people].” Mark 6:38; John 6:9-10

Lord, today I want to be like that little boy. I am very small, and the world is a sea of need. Still, I will bring You what little I have—energy, attention, time, words, deeds, thoughts. Please take them and multiply them.
