my small part

Once upon a time, there were thousands of hungry people out in the middle of nowhere. In that big, hungry crowd, there was one small boy who had one small lunch. The grownups around him said, “What good can one small lunch do in this big, hungry crowd?” The small boy didn’t know the answer to that big question. He just did his small part by giving his one small lunch.

“‘There’s a small boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but how far will they go among so many?’ . . . Jesus took the bread and, having given thanks, gave it to the people. . . . He did the same with the fish. All ate as much as they wanted.” John 6:9, 11

Father, I feel small in this big, hungry world. Today, I give you what little I have to offer. That is my small part. Your part is to do wonders.

“[F]or Christ plays in ten thousand places, / Lovely in limbs, and lovely in eyes not his / To the Father through the features of men’s faces.” Gerard Manley Hopkins
