being gone

I have a friend whose child is a man now. He has been gone for many long and painful years. His mother does not know where he is or whether he will ever tire of being gone. When she speaks of him, she calls him her beloved. She waits. She reminds me of God.

“And He said . . . ‘How often I have longed to gather [you] as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.’” Luke 13:34

“Just in case you ever do get tired of being gone / Every light in the house is on.” Trace Adkins, lyrics
