A few days ago, I went to a dinner party. Beforehand, the prospect of spending hours with a big group of people, most of whom I had never met, loomed like Mt. Everest. How would I think of things to say, especially on a day when I was feeling anxious and inadequate? Just before departure time, I took my dread for a swim. In the middle of the river, in a flash, I remembered the habit of looking for beauty. All week, I had been practicing, and now I had the grand opportunity of looking for beauty in twenty-two people brand new people. Dread disappeared, and I enjoyed every minute of the party.
“We see always what we are looking for, and if our mind has become trained to look for trouble and difficulty . . . , we find just what we seek. On the other hand, it is quite as easy to form the habit of looking always for beauty . . . , and here, too, we shall find precisely what we seek.” J. R. Miller
