turn to God

When you’re feeling afraid and powerless, the most important thing is which way you turn.

“[The king] was afraid . . . and said, ‘We are powerless . . . and we don’t know what to do, but our eyes are on You.’” 2 Chronicles 20:3, 12

“There is always some level at which we can choose, freely, to turn to God or to turn away from God. . . .” Dr. Gerald May

fill in the blank

Fill in the blank: if _____ happens, I won’t be okay (emotionally or financially or whatever). Now imagine letting go of _____, just for today.

Lord, carrying this thing is making me sick and tired. I give it to You today.

“Give every worry to Him. . . .” 1 Peter 5:7

relax and let go

When you’ve spent years wishing somebody were different and trying to change her, it feels good to stop.

“You can accept things as they are, or you can keep going around the barn and around the barn and around the barn without ever saying, ‘There’s a barn here.’” An acquaintance

“Relax and let go and cease striving. . . .” Psalm 46:10

today's pleasures

When you’re going through hard times, you can try to protect yourself by grabbing the wheel, but it won’t work very well (and you’ll miss today’s pleasures).

“If God really is driving, I can relax and look out the window.” Unknown

“People take refuge under Your wings . . . and You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures.” Psalm 36:7-8

a day off

Trying to control things (like conversations and your children’s lives) is exhausting. That’s why taking a day off feels so good.

“I freely and heartily yield all things to Your pleasure and disposal.” A prayer of John Wesley

“Don’t be afraid. . . .” Luke 12:32

love and hurry

I have a contented friend. He walks slowly and speaks slowly and puts his fork down between bites. He is an invitation to me.

“[S]avor the moment. . . . [L]ove and hurry are fundamentally incompatible.” Adele Calhoun

“Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking.” Romans 12:2
