minute vacations

“Teach me the art / of taking minute vacations of slowing down / to look at a flower / to chat with an old friend or make a new one / to pat a stray dog / to watch a spider build a web / to smile at a child / or to read a few lines from a good book.” Wilferd A. Peterson

I have a small friend who takes a minute vacation every time he washes his hands. He stands on his little stool at the bathroom sink, rubs his soapy hands together, and then rinses them. I reach to turn off the faucet so that we can move on to the next thing, but he isn’t finished. He says, “First, we have to make a waterfall.” He pushes one little finger into the faucet and watches his spurting waterfall with delight. Then, after his minute vacation, he is ready for whatever the grownups have in mind.

Lord, please open my eyes today to see opportunities to take minute vacations. By nightfall, I hope to have a collection of vacations to revisit and re-enjoy.
